How we think about this

Rapid prototyping got fast. Finishing didn't.

An AI coding tool can stand up a working prototype in an afternoon now. Screens, endpoints, a database, a login page. It demos beautifully. We use these tools every day and we're not going to pretend otherwise; they have changed how much a small team can ship.

Then the prototype meets the world. Two users edit the same record at the same time. A query that was instant on fifty rows takes eleven seconds on fifty thousand. A payment retries and somebody gets charged twice. A migration drops a column that turned out to matter. None of that shows up in the demo, because the demo was never under load and never had real data in it.

That last stretch, roughly the final 20% of any real system, isn't generation. It's judgment. It's knowing which things break first and building for them before they do. There's no prompt for it, and there isn't going to be one.

I grew up around crews when power tools arrived on job sites. The tool made everyone faster. The person who knew what to build stayed. Same thing here.

AI gets you to a prototype faster than anything we've ever used. Getting from prototype to something that holds up under real users is still a person's job.

So that's what Lightwell is for. Most AI tools do little for the average small business without expert guidance.

That's not a popular thing to say right now. Everybody selling AI has a reason not to say it. But we've looked at a lot of businesses, and for most of them the tools being marketed would change very little for a lot of money. Not because the tools are bad. Because nobody showed them which one, where it fits, or whether it fits at all.

A residential plumber I sat down with was completely against AI. So I asked him how many calls he missed a day while he was under somebody's sink.
